Contagion wasn’t exactly the hit that everyone thought it would be. The film boasted acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh behind the camera and one hell of a cast in front, but things didn’t pan out too well. Reviews were mixed and the film didn’t make much of a dent at the box office. Despite all this, it seems as if Warner Bros. is still interested in pursuing a sequel of sorts.
The Wrap tells us that Warner Bros. has put out an “open writing assignment” for Contagion 2, which means that they don’t really have any ideas for a sequel but are hoping that they could find a writer that can make it work. Apparently, Scott Z. Burns, who wrote the first film, will produce but there’s no word on if Soderbergh will direct again.
Personally, I enjoyed Contagion a lot. It’s one of the scariest films I’ve seen in years and I thought it was very effective. I’m not sure where they would go with a sequel, aside from somehow bringing the virus back, but hopefully they can work something out.
