Earlier today we saw the first images from David Ayer’s upcoming action thriller Sabotage. While they provided an adequate look at what seems to be a wholly mediocre film, tonight sees the release of the first trailer, which paints a better picture of what we’re in for.
Unfortunately, my thoughts haven’t changed a whole lot since this morning. I do like the grounded feel that the footage gives off, and the ensemble cast led by Arnold Schwarzenegger looks promising, but nothing about Sabotage really stands out to me. Ayer is a proven talent when it comes to gritty crime/cop films, so I won’t give up hope just yet. Plus, like I said, the ensemble (which boasts names like Joe Manganiello, Sam Worthington, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Josh Holloway, Olivia Williams and Mireille Enos), is nothing to scoff at. I just wish that something about this trailer stuck out to me. I wish there was something here to differentiate Sabotage from the countless other action thrillers that are thrown at us every year.
All we see in the trailer below is some clunky dialogue, bland action sequences and Arnold Schwarzenegger being Arnold Schwarzenegger, promising to “destroy them.” Sure, it may provide for some mindless popcorn entertainment, but after Ayer’s stunning End of Watch, I was expecting better.
For those who haven’t been keeping up, Sabotage follows Schwarzenegger’s character, who leads an elite DEA task force. When they raid the safe house of a deadly drug cartel, one-by-one team members are mysteriously killed off, and it’s up to Arnie to find out why.
Sabotage hits theaters on April 11th, 2014. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
