Peter Berg has a lot to prove. After his disastrous 2012 flick Battleship, I wasn’t too keen on checking out his next effort, Lone Survivor. But then the trailer released and I must say, I’m starting to change my mind. Erasing all bitter memories of the director’s last outing, this one actually looks really good.
Starring Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch and Eric Bana, the film is based on the novel of the same name, which tells the story “of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative who are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.”
Given the large scale of Berg’s last film, this one is surprisingly a lot smaller and seems to be a lot more intimate. Or at least about as intimate as you can get with a war film. All of the actors look great in their roles (especially Wahlberg) and it seems that Berg is more focused on the human element of the story here, rather than on the action and spectacle of war.
Though I haven’t read the novel that the film is based on, Lone Survivor looks like it will present an emotional and harrowing story, one that may really resonate with audiences.
The film is pegged in for a December 27th, 2013 release date, which makes us think that Universal is gunning for some awards recognition. Judging by how this first trailer looks, they just might get what they’re going after.
Check out the trailer for Lone Survivor below and let us know what you think in the comments. Can Berg redeem himself? And better yet, can Taylor Kitsch redeem himself?
