Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling are getting ready to take their new film, Only God Forgives, to the Cannes Film Festival. Hoping to repeat the success they found with their last effort, Drive, Gosling and Refn look to provide another stunning and electrifying tale only this time, they’re promising us that it’s “more extreme” than their previous collaboration.
In recent weeks, we’ve seen a fair bit of promotion from the film, including several trailers and posters. Now, we’re receiving more in the way of marketing as three new clips, totalling around six minutes, have been released. Though they don’t show off a whole lot, we do get to see more of Kristin Scott Thomas’ character as well as more of Gosling violent’s side as he extracts some brutal revenge. There’s also a peek at Vithaya Pansringarm’s character on the hunt for a murderer.
Honestly, the film looks absolutely incredible and I’m eagerly anticipating its July 19th release date. I absolutely loved Drive, loved, loved loved it. And I’m a huge fan of both Gosling and Refn. I think they are two of the most exciting individuals currently working in Hollywood. Their last effort proved that they could produce something truly wonderful while working together and I don’t think Only God Forgives will be any different.
Check out the clips below and let us know what you think.
Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.
