It’s been awhile since I missed living in Great Britain so much. July 5 is coming up and if I was still a UK resident, I would get the pleasure of seeing Ben Wheatley’s A Field In England. But being American, I will have to wait for another little while and be satisfied with all the delicious trailers and TV spots for the film instead.
The newest trailer and subsequent TV spot don’t tell us much more about A Field In England than we already knew. Actually, they tell us even less. We know, for instance, that the film is ostensibly about a group of deserters from the English Civil War who wind up captured by an alchemist. The alchemist wants them to help him search for a hidden treasure in a mushroom field. But you won’t get that from either of these teasers.
Instead what you’ll get is some seriously trippy stuff going on. The trailer feels like it references early silent films like Haxan or some Soviet montage, juxtaposing images and animations into what can only be described as a sensory experience. The TV spot is a bit more straight-forward, reminding us that this film comes courtesy of director Ben Wheatley (Kill List, Sightseers), and that it will premiere simultaneously in theatres, DVD and Blu-ray, VOD and on Film 4. What both bring home is that this film, like everything Wheatley’s done so far, will be an experience.
A Field In England stars Michael Smiley, Julian Barratt and Reece Shearsmith. Beyond that, you’ll just have to watch the trailer and TV spot and draw your own conclusions. For my part, I cannot wait for the film to come to the US (thanks to Drafthouse Films) later this year. Check out the videos below and let us know what you think in the comments.
