The long awaited second trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi is finally here, six months after the first one whet our appetites for Rian Johnson’s upcoming sequel to The Force Awakens. Despite the movie opening in a little over two months now, these previews pretty much make up everything we know about the film thus far, so fans will surely want to rewatch them ad infinitum in order to glean as many clues as possible.
Now that we have them both, perhaps the best way to view the trailers is back to back, so we can collate everything we’ve seen of the movie so far and work out where it all fits together. Luckily for you, the video below has compiled both the teaser from the spring and yesterday’s new offering into one handy package, resulting in a complete viewing experience.
The two trailers make for interesting counterparts, as it almost feels like they depict the same events from two different perspectives. The first is largely more hopeful, until the killer final line, as it focuses on Rey’s training at the hands (well, one hand, one cyborg mitt) of Luke Skywalker. The second trailer, meanwhile, gives us a lot of Kylo Ren and Snoke, as well as revealing that Luke’s terrified of Rey’s power – perhaps pushing her to the Dark Side.
There’s a clear theme running through the trailers, then, of Rey and Kylo Ren being on opposites sides of the Force, but with each wavering in their loyalties so that they’re much closer than they realize. It suggests that The Last Jedi is going to be the most mature Star Wars movie yet in terms of the fight between good vs. evil, as most of the primary characters will operate less in black and white and more in shades of grey.
A third trailer is bound to arrive next month, too, so we’ll just have to wait and see what that one has in store for us ahead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s debut on December 15th.
