Few films boast the same number of big-name characters as Avengers: Infinity War, and fewer still are willing to kill off half their ensemble cast in the name of balance.
That’s pretty remarkable in and of itself, but it’s the way in which Infinity War‘s finale was delivered that really kept Marvel fans awake at night, tossing and turning as they replayed Spidey’s last words (“Mr. Stark? I don’t feel so good”) in their heads over and over… and over again.
Turns out allowing Peter Parker to fall into the hands of Tony Stark was a conscious decision on the Russos’ part, as it helped amplify that gut-wrenching feeling of hopelessness. Ditto for framing Bucky’s death from the perspective of his old pal Steve Rogers, while Okoye, whose sole purpose is to protect the king at all costs, watches as Black Panther succumbs to the finger-snap, too.
It’s all very fascinating, as it reminds us that Avengers: Infinity War is a well-thought-out masterstroke of franchise filmmaking. But don’t just take our word for it, here’s the latest from Joe and Anthony Russo:
This admittedly bleak featurette is just the latest Infinity War tidbit to emerge online today, given Marvel fans have spent their mornings poring over the impressive battle sequence on Titan, along with an in-depth featurette dedicated to the creation of Thanos – from Josh Brolin’s early days in the mo-cap suit right up until the extra legwork performed by the CGI, every inch of the Mad Titan’s creation is covered in great detail.
And it’s all to promote the Blu-ray release of Avengers: Infinity War, which arrives just as Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp is nearing $500M at the worldwide box office. Its performance helps cap off a pretty incredible year for the company, too, which is only fitting given the MCU just notched its 10th birthday. Here’s to many more.
