With Shazam! Fury of the Gods falling to pieces at the box office and The Flash drawing a line under the first decade of the DCU, a lot of people have been wondering where exactly Blue Beetle fits in.
After all, the superhero origin story was initially scheduled to be released as an HBO Max exclusive, but it must have plenty of backers at Warner Bros. after being upgraded to theatrical. James Gunn is definitely one of them, so maybe he’s got plans for Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes moving forward.
Nothing is set in stone as of yet with Gods & Monsters yet to truly take shape, but in an interview with Empire, the leading man admitted that while the outcome is entirely dependent on audience reception and box office numbers, he’s ready and willing to be absorbed into the wider mythology.
“If we get one movie or a trilogy and f*cking fold this into the Justice League sh*t, we’re ready for the whole nine. For me and Angel [Manuel Soto, director] and the team, we kicked ass with this movie. It just depends on numbers.”
The buzz is strong for Blue Beetle, even if some folks weren’t left best pleased after George Lopez called Batman a fascist, but they’re more a vocal minority than anything else. The proof, as always, will come when people decide whether or not they want to check out the DC Comics adaptation on the big screen. If they do, then maybe Maridueña will get his wish and either team up with or face off against the Justice League.
