Who Is Doctor Strange?

After 13 films in eight years, we find ourselves on the crest of a brand new wave of movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and it is Doctor Strange that's spearheading this shake-up. The studio has released a veritable avalanche of promotional footage, specifically geared toward highlighting this new perspective, as the giant of the comic book adaptation introduces magic and mysticism to its stable of superheroes.

After studying with The Ancient One, Doctor Strange takes up residence in The Sanctum Sanctorum in New York City. The building occupies a site once used for Native American rituals and pagan sacrifices, and is supposedly a focal point of supernatural energies.

It is notable for its large, distinctive, round window, and apparent its structural quirks, which cause it to seem much larger on the inside than it does externally. Rooms seem to change location at random, and many house dangerous and powerful items. In the comic books, the building has temporarily provided refuge for both The New Avengers and The Defenders, and is itself defended by magical incantations.

Doctor Strange’s Magical Possessions

Beyond his scientific intellect and mystical training, Doctor Strange has no specific superpowers of which to speak. He does, however, possess a number of magical items whose power he is able to harness, while also enjoying the support of various mystical beings, such as The Vishanti.

His foremost tools are the Cloak of Levitation, which enables him to fly, and the Eye of Agamotto. This is an amulet that is used to counteract negative magic, but in the upcoming film, it has been speculated that it will contain the Time infinity stone.

In addition to these items, Doctor Strange also has the use of the Orb of Agamotto, which provides the power of clairvoyance, and which was previously, briefly seen in 2011’s Thor.
