Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is the seventh Transformers movie and it’s set to be released sometime this year. This action-packed movie brings back some familiar characters such as Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, as well as introducing a new set of characters that will help the Autobots to save the world.
Alongside the new characters come new enemies. One of them is Unicron, which will be the newest big bad that these transforming robots will have to face. But who is this new foe in the Transformers film saga and what makes him different from Megatron and the other Decepticons that were introduced in previous installments?
Who is Unicron? Transformers: Rise of the Beasts lore, explained
Based on the film’s trailer, the clue we got about Unicron’s power level was that he can “eat planets” and that planet Earth is about to be part of this bad guy’s next meal. Unicron’s presence was foreshadowed in Transformers: The Last Knight‘s ending, which showed Quntessa offering a group of human scientists a way to kill Unicron as they inspect this robot’s horn.
In the official lore however, Unicron’s story in the comics constantly gets rewritten and it’s currently unknown which version of Unicron’s story will be used in the upcoming film. As of writing, Unicron’s story has four versions, different stories but have some things that remain constant throughout each retelling.
According to official Transformer lore from the comics, Unicron is also known as “The Lord of Chaos” and is the eternal-arch enemy of his twin brother, Primus. Unicron has a single goal, to end the creation of independence that surrounds him and to become the living center of infinite nothingness. Unicron has the ability to destroy universes, which leads to new ones being born. Alongside his destruction of existence, he also makes deals with lesser beings to give them power in exchange for their servitude, stripping them from their free will.
Unicron once could travel to different multiverses and threatened to end their existence. However, thanks to the Shrouding event initiated by Nexus Prime, Unicron could no longer multiverse hop anymore and are bound by its own dimensions.
It will be interesting to see which part of Unicron’s various tales will be part of this live-action adaptation. But one thing’s for sure, he is indeed a huge threat that the Autobots and their allies will have to face if they want to save their new home. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be released on June 9, 2023.
