We still have a few months till the premiere of Wonder Woman 1984 – that is, if the COVID-19 pandemic slows down to the point that allows theaters to open up again – but the movie’s tie-in products are giving a lot of plot points away.
Patty Jenkins’ highly anticipated sequel to the story of Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince has already gone through several delays due to the current outbreak of the novel coronavirus. At this point, it’s not easy to determine whether we’ll get to finally watch the movie in the slated release window of October, especially given the fact that the infectious disease continues to rip through different regions across the globe at a concerning speed. Nevertheless, fans can barely contain their excitement for the upcoming flick, that’ll not only embark on a new era with the Amazonian Princess but also bring back fan-favorite character Steve Trevor.
A lot of people have thus far speculated as to how this is possible, but Wonder Woman 1984‘s junior novelization and kids book, which have already released, give us a definitive answer. We know that things could unfold differently in the movie itself, but this at least gives us a general idea about the narrative.
Needless to say, major spoilers for WW84 follow, so read at your own risk….
Apparently, Steve Trevor will return to the land of the living through an artifact known as the Dreamstone, a mysterious citrine ring that grants its user one wish. Diana comes in contact with the stone as she and Cheetah are going through a seized collection of artifacts that were being smuggled into the US.
Diana further explains that the artifact is imbued with the power of the Gods, just like her Lasso of Truth. Ultimately, they learn that the Dreamstone is a creation of the God of Lies, which is why destruction dogs its footsteps. Trevor returning is the one wish that Diana makes, but if they end up having to destroy the stone, he’ll die again.
That sounds like yet another bleak ending for Diana Prince in Wonder Woman 1984, but I guess that’s part of what makes her character so compelling in the first place. As to how things will exactly play out, we’ll have to wait and watch the movie for ourselves when it hits theaters, if it ever does, sometime in the future.
