Little by little, we’re beginning to form a rough outline of what to expect from Wonder Woman 2, the all-but-confirmed sequel set to bring Diana Prince back to the future.
Not only that, but Patty Jenkins has already hinted at her desire to bring DC’s Immortal Warrior Stateside for a more contemporary story. That temporal shift naturally poses some logistical problems of its own, and during a recent chat with Fandango, Jenkins, who now holds the record for the biggest domestic opening by a female director ($100.5 million), touched base on the possibility of bringing certain characters back in time for Wonder Woman 2.
Steve Trevor is one name that’s been fuelling debate online, and it’s no secret that the at-times effortless chemistry between Chris Pine’s WWI fighter pilot and Diana, Princess of Theymscira (Gal Gadot) is one of the many highlights of Patty Jenkins’ box office triumph. But assuming Patty Jenkins and her creative team double down on the time shift, thereby bringing Diana Prince closer to the present day, it all but rules out the possibility of Chris Pine reprising as Steve Trevor further down the line. Nothing has been set in stone just yet, of course, after the director told Fandango that discussions are still underway at this early, early stage.
All I can say is it was a dilemma. It’s something I hope we don’t talk about in the public [because] I want people to see, but it’s very hard to know which characters will be in the next movie because of the time period, so it’s a big question.
Wonder Woman landed on June 2nd to an outpouring of glowing reviews. That overly positive word of mouth helped nudge Patty Jenkins’ spectacular origin movie toward box office stardom, too, with the film’s international total now north of $223 million.
