The idea that The Smurfs was even mildly successful is shocking enough, but now Sony has announced that there will in fact be a sequel, which will be released on August 2nd, 2013.
The Smurfs, which released just over a week ago, has made almost $150 million internationally (holy smurf!). With a Rotten Tomates score of 22% and a Metacritic score of 30, it’s only fitting that this film should get a sequel, right?
I mean, there’s nothing I love more than a children’s film based on a cartoon series that is so old that even the generation above the target audience didn’t watch it. In fact, the only thing I like more than that is casting awful “musicians,” like Katy Perry, as the over-sexed, token female in the series.
The August 2nd release date is two weeks after Disney’s Turbo and one week after Thor 2. The Smurfs probably won’t have much competition with Thor 2 and Turbo shouldn’t be a problem either, unless it has Disney/Pixar type success.
I guess this news is only fitting with the Hollywood sequel trend, especially in kids’ films that don’t even get good ratings but make lots of money. (Yes, I’m talking about you Shrek 4 and Puss in Boots.)
Looks like we’re getting more Smurfs whether you like it or not. Are you happy about this? Let us know in the comments below.
