“I’m gonna wreck it!”
Ralph is back, and this time, he’s bought a one-way ticket to the Internet, a sprawling online metropolis teeming with clickbait headlines that are all too familiar (“these 10 child stars went to prison – number six will amaze you!”) and other phishing scams designed to hoodwink its readers into pointing their cursors in the wrong direction.
Yes, it can only be the first teaser trailer for Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, Disney Animation’s long-awaited sequel that journeys far beyond the confines of Litwak’s dinky video arcade and into the World Wide Web. With Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman returns to the voice booth) by his side, everyone’s favorite bad guy sets out on a quest to save the Internet – not to mention Vanellope’s homeworld of Sugar Rush – from destruction.
It’s a fairly vague and somewhat familiar set-up, but based on this morning’s teaser, we’re cautiously optimistic about Ralph’s next big-screen adventure – not least because it involves a run-in with a website entrepreneur named Yesss, who will be brought to life by none other than Taraji P. Henson.
Beyond that, story details are few and far between; however, we can wean some new clues from the sequel’s official synopsis:
Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 leaves Litwak’s video arcade behind, venturing into the uncharted, expansive and thrilling world of the internet – which may or may not survive Ralph’s wrecking. Video game bad Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz must risk it all by traveling to the world wide web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s video game, Sugar Rush. In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet – the netizens – to help navigate their way, including a website entrepreneur named Yesss, who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of trend-making website ‘Buzztube.’
Featuring the voices of Silverman, John C. Reilly (Ralph), Jack McBrayer (Fix-It Felix), Jane Lynch (Sergeant Calhoun) and Taraji P. Henson (Yesss), Wreck-It Ralph 2 boots online on November 21st, before making its way across the pond and into UK cinemas on November 30th.
