It’s been a tough journey for X-Men: Dark Phoenix, with the Fox film undergoing multiple delays and heavy reshoots, but despite all the bad buzz, a lot fans are really hoping that director Simon Kinberg will emerge from this messy period with a worthwhile movie.
According to The DisInsider’s Skyler Shuler, however, sources indicate that the next big screen outing for Charles Xavier and his peers will be every bit the disaster that we’ve long feared it could be, taking to Twitter to relay the report:
“Based on what i have heard, this movie cold be Fant4stic level BAD.”
While we can judge for ourselves later this year if Dark Phoenix really is that bad, the 2015 Fantastic Four movie might at least be a fitting comparison when it comes to the film’s troubled production, with Josh Trank’s critically panned feature also undergoing extensive reshoots before bombing on release.
Of course, one only has to look at the success of last year’s Venom – a film that was also likened by early viewers to the 2015 Fantastic Four – to see that negative chatter doesn’t always tank a flick, but after the lukewarm response received by 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, it’s clear that much of the public isn’t feeling too hyped about the idea of returning to the series.
So while Simon Kinberg has repeatedly gone on the record insisting that the movie will make up for the mistakes of 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand in adapting the same story, it’s quite possible that the reception to X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be even worse. But before we get too gloomy about a flick that most of us haven’t watched yet, let’s just wait and see how the film fares when it hits theaters on June 7th, 2019.
