If you’ve been paying close attention to Shazam!, you’ll likely recall the moment when David Sandberg placed the DC community on red alert after announcing that the official reveal of Zachary Levi in costume was “right around the corner.” That was three months ago…
So, what gives? Turns out a change of plans delayed the official suit reveal (indefinitely, perhaps?) and Sandberg still isn’t sure what Warner Bros. has planned for his 2019 standalone movie. Be that as it may, Levi himself has now come through to give fans their first look at him in costume via some new promo art.
Seen in the gallery below, this isn’t an official photo from the studio but considering that all we’ve been able to lay eyes on so far are set snaps – most of which were pretty blurry – we’ll take what we can get. Unfortunately, all we can see here is the actor from the top up, but the costume’s certainly looking good and this should be enough to tide fans over until WB decides to put something out.
Story-wise, we know Sandberg’s DCEU pic will see the 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) transform into an adult with the powers of superhuman strength, speed, intelligence, flight and wisdom. Think Tom Hanks’ Big, but just with a touch of otherworldly abilities. Levi, of course, is on board to play the full-grown Batson.
Details beyond that have been hard to come by, but if nothing else, the 2019 release will undoubtedly bring some levity to the po-faced DC Extended Universe, which is perhaps exactly what everyone needs after the dreadful Justice League movie. Of course, there’s still Aquaman to look forward to, and we know James Wan plans to plunge into the depths of Atlantis this December.
And after that? Shazam! is all set to take flight on April 5th, 2019, so it shouldn’t be too much longer before we have an official photo of Levi in costume. Stay tuned.
