Taking to VERO as he so often does, Zack Snyder has given us another look at what could’ve been today, sharing an image of Darkseid from his cut of Justice League.
Seen in the gallery below, the iconic DC villain is shown on what appears to be some ancient artwork that’s being investigated by Wonder Woman. Captioning his post with “A bell can’t be unrung” – which is a reference to a quote from Lex Luthor in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice – it seems the director’s hinting that perhaps Luthor was teasing Darkseid’s impending invasion.
Chalk that up as speculation for now, but you can take another look at what Zack originally had planned for us below and see what you make of it:
If you’re not familiar with Darkseid, he’s more or less Thanos but only cooler. Created by Jack Kirby, he rules over the hellish planet of Apokalips and acts as the God of all Evil. He’s unbelievably powerful as well and can usually take down Superman in a fight. Not to mention that he’s also responsible for some of the best event arcs in DC Comics, too, with a particular highlight being Grant Morrison’s excellent Final Crisis.
And we might have gotten to see some of that stuff brought to the big screen in Zack Snyder’s inimitably bombastic and operatic style. It’s a shame what happened with the director’s cut of Justice League, to be sure, but at least we’ll get the chance to watch Darkseid in action in Ava DuVernay’s New Gods, which will focus on the war between Apokalips and its opposing planet New Genesis.
Still, it seems unlikely at this stage that we’ll ever get to see Superman unleash his full power in a ‘world made of cardboard’ or Batman shooting the big bad with a magic time bullet anytime soon, and what a damn shame that is.
