Spider-Man: No Way Home is the hands-down single most successful MCU movie since Avengers: Endgame, being the only entry in the Multiverse Saga to earn over a $1 billion at the box office and come close to measuring up to the Infinity Saga epic’s appeal with its triple-the-Spidey multiversal crossover. So the promise that Spider-Man 4 will bring the team behind that movie back together should, by rights, result in euphoric reactions. But, no, apparently not.
According to new intel hailing from insider Daniel RPK (via One Take News), Sony and Marvel are aiming to start filming on Spider-Man 4 by late 2024. As you would expect, Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker, with director Jon Watts back in the director’s seat. What’s more, despite No Way Home ending on a tragic note regarding the wallcrawler’s romantic life, Zendaya also appears to be back as MJ. I’d say this is just a rumor so don’t get too excited for now, but actually that doesn’t seem to be a problem.
Instead of parties being thrown in the streets, the Marvel masses are already taking this news in a negative direction, with many arguing that a new trilogy means we should be getting a fresh creative direction for the character.
Others are apparently keen for Peter to get a new love interest. Namely, one called Felicia Hardy.
Some aren’t even attempting to hide their feelings on both Jon Watts…
… Or Zendaya.
Certain folks seem keen to preserve the power of No Way Home‘s sad ending and feel having Peter and MJ reunite would ruin it.
Asking Marvel to get rid of a highly lucrative actress like Zendaya, not to mention demanding Holland stop working with his real-life partner, is a tall ask, but to be fair there is perhaps something to be said about concerns over No Way Home‘s significance being watered down. Still, it’s not like we really thought Peter’s story was going to end in such a downbeat way. If there’s one thing the past 60 years of Spider-Man media has taught us, it’s that the webslinger always swings back.
