Zombie fever pushes a decade-old Brad Pitt film you’ve probably already seen back into the Netflix charts

Is this the work of 'The Last of Us' or just a weird coincidence?

Whether it be a new wave of zombie-genre media interest as a result of The Last of Us, a quiet week on the streaming charts, or something else entirely – for one reason or another, a decade-old zombie film starring Brad Pitt has poked its way into the top ten most-watched movies on Netflix this week.

That movie, is of course World War Zwhich snagged the number nine spot in Netflix’s global movie charts for the March 6 – 12 period, with a little over 5.5 million hours viewed. Sitting at the top of the list was the Idris Elba-led Netflix original, Luther: The Fallen Sun, followed by Faraway and We Have a Ghost in the number two and three spots.

Whether the surge World War Z viewership is a result of The Last of Us withdrawals following its final two episodes is debatable, given that the Brad Pitt film and the HBO series are two very different zombie-genre stories, and in the case of The Last of Us, we use the term “zombie” quite hesitantly.

Regardless, it is what it is – and all things considered, World War Z is still a half-decent watch. Around ten years after its release, it sits as just-barely-fresh 66 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences enjoyed it a little more, scoring it at 72 percent.

World War Z stars Brad Pitt as former United Nations employee Gerry Lane who goes on a globetrotting adventure to try and halt perhaps one of the most vicious and intense zombie pandemics we’ve ever seen in live-action.
