Zombieland 2 Writers Tease A Time Jump For The Film

Should Zombieland 2 be a go, there would have to be an inescapable time jump, something Wernick and his writing partner, Rhett Reese, acknowledged today.

Nearly a decade removed from the release of Zombieland, and the idea of a sequel is intermittently convulsing.

Although over a year ago a script was believed to be in place, up until a few days ago, there hadn’t been any subsequent news regarding Zombieland 2. Thankfully, co-screenwriter Paul Wernick provided a status update earlier this week.

During an interview with Vulture, Wernick disclosed that hopefully “we’re shooting that thing [Zombieland 2] early 2019 for an October of ’19 release.” While this is far from an official confirmation, the Deadpool producer seems pretty adamant that the film is a certainty, even going so far as to say that the original cast will be returning.

Wernick did add that he was “sitting on information” that he couldn’t “share at this moment” as well, which might be a sly reference to studio backing, but it’s best not to be presumptive in situations like these.

However, should Zombieland 2 be a go, there would have to be an inescapable time jump, given that Abigail Breslin, who was a preteen when she portrayed Little Rock in the first film, will be nine years older. That’s something Wernick and his writing partner, Rhett Reese, acknowledged during a Reddit AMA earlier today, saying:

“Abigail Breslin is nine years older than she was in Z1, so it won’t be happening directly after! Can’t say beyond that!”

Reese and Wernick, who co-wrote both Deadpool movies, took no issue in teasing fans of their horror comedy, stating that those “who’ve been hoping for a Zombieland 2,” will have their wish granted “very, very soon.” I don’t mean to be a pessimist, but seeing as we don’t have all the information just yet, abstaining from elation is probably the most logical course of action. At least until we hear a bit more from some official channels.
