While EDM mastermind deadmau5 has been hitting SoundCloud pretty hard over the last several months with a constant stream of demos, the ever popular producer marked his first official release in two years today, dropping his latest single, “Snowcone.”
The song sees deadmau5 stepping back from the progressive house trappings that have dominated the bulk of his output, exploring hip hop style beats and a warbly, ambient backing track. In fact, the new single seems to take some influence from Boards of Canada (who he’s made nods to in the past) with its mellow production and woozy sound.
The latest mau5 single had previously been heard in April, and was dropped as a surprise without prior warning. Between the release of “Snowcone” and the constant flow of SoundCloud demos he’s been posting, we may well be on the verge of a new deadmau5 album, which would finally close the gap since his last studio album in 2014, While (1<2).
