Trevell Coleman, better known as G-Dep, turned himself in and confessed to a 1993 murder due to a guilty conscience.
Coleman was one of the better known rappers signed to Diddy’s (then Puff Daddy/ P. Diddy) Bad Boy Records label in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and is most known for the single, Let’s Get It with Diddy and Black Rob in 2001 as well as his solo album ‘Child of the Ghetto’ released the same year.
The New York Post confirmed that Coleman, 36, walked into the 25th Precinct on Wednesday night and confessed to the murder of John Henkel outside of the James Weldon Johnson Houses in East Harlem on October 19th, 1993. The officers then contacted the 23rd Precinct, where the crime took place.
Coleman, who lived in the projects, told the officers that he was riding a bike when he approached Henkel, 32, on Park Avenue and East 114th Street and announced a robbery. When Henkel resisted, the then 18-year old Coleman grabbed his .40-caliber gun and shot him three times in the chest. Coleman said he then fled and tossed the weapon into the East River. Henkel was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He purportedly told police details of the closed case that only the killer would know. When the police reviewed the very cold case files, they found that his story matched up with the case files. “It was just eating away at him,” said a police source.
Coleman was charged with murder and is being held without bail. “My client is presumed innocent, and the case is going to grand jury,” said Coleman’s lawyer, Michael Alperstein.
