Sam Feldt isn’t the sort of artist you might expect to venture far outside the confines of melodic house music, and his remix of R3hab and Quintino’s “Freak” is about as far from his usual repertoire as he gets.
The original track was itself an updated version of Adina Howard’s 1995 R&B classic “Freak Like Me,” fitted for electronic music DJ sets. Where Feldt’s typical work relies predominantly on organic samples – or at the very least, synths that mimic them – his “Freak” remix is centered around a relatively sterile-sounding synth lead. Xylophone-like synths underscore the melody, however, giving it an uncharacteristic tropical house vibe.
Between his recent track, “Shadows Of Love,” and this remix, it appears as though Sam Feldt is looking to diversify his sound this festival season, which is certainly fine by us.
