Sia is still capitalizing on the success of her single “Cheap Thrills,” but that isn’t stopping her from releasing an entirely new song seemingly out of nowhere. Similarly to how “Cheap Thrills” featured Sean Paul in a guest role, the new track, aptly-titled “The Greatest,” features a verse by rapper Kendrick Lamar.
“The Greatest,” while a brand new song, sounds like it could have very well been written during the sessions of Sia’s latest album, This Is Acting, but that isn’t a bad thing. The song itself continues the theme of This Is Acting, which is high intensity, high quality pop, and even if it doesn’t do anything inventive, it matches the consistency of her recent music.
For “The Greatest,” simplicity is its strongest suit: its repetitive chorus makes for great radio fodder with an electronic beat that has the track begging to be remixed, and Lamar delivers yet another solid guest appearance. Sia released a music video for the track, too, but it doesn’t include Lamar – instead, you get great choreography and fantastic visuals thanks to director Daniel Askill, who has been the mastermind behind previous Sia videos such as “Chandelier” and “Elastic Heart.”
Even though “Cheap Thrills” is a recent number one hit for Sia, it seems like “The Greatest” was released in preparation for the singer’s upcoming headlining tour, which starts at the end of September.
