Despite Bucky Barnes counting himself among those affected by Thanos’ reality-altering snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, my gut tells me that big things await the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Likewise, the comic book side of things is giving us much to talk about, as the House of Ideas will soon launch a new Winter Soldier title.
Right now, not much information regarding the plot has been given, though we have been supplied with this brief synopsis:
You know his name. You know the things he’s done. And now that the man known as The Winter Soldier has found redemption, he’s going to help others do the same…even if it’s not as easy as he expects.
Granted, that does sound quite intriguing, but if you need more reassurance, know that the five-issue miniseries will be penned by none other than Kyle Higgins, whom you should know from his days working on Batman Beyond 2.0 and Nightwing. Joining him on art will be Rod Reis (Secret Empire, Doctor Strange: Damnation), whose work you can sample in the teaser image seen below.
Getting back to what’ll actually take place, Higgins had this to offer:
“As someone with quite a bit of experience writing grown up sidekicks, I know firsthand how important it is to define the character outside of their relationship with their mentor. Since being freed from Soviet brainwashing, Bucky has done a massive amount of work to atone for his sins–becoming Captain America, spending time in the Gulag, dying to save the world… in many ways, he’s found redemption. So, what’s next for him? He’s going to help other people do the same.”
To follow up on that, Kyle mentioned Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting’s run on Captain America, which I absolutely loved. If his addition to the mythos is at all comparable, then we’re definitely in for something special – even if Bucky won’t be the Sentinel of Liberty this time around.
“As someone who grew up loving sidekicks, I’ve been fascinated by Bucky Barnes for as long as I’ve been reading comics. Then, in 2005, I fell in love with the character all over again thanks to Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting’s incredible Winter Soldier run. Now, along with one of my favorite artists in comics, I’m thrilled to be taking Bucky Barnes on his next journey.”
Winter Soldier #1 arrives in comic shops on December 5th.
