When two Colorado bass mainstays join forces on a track, you can bet that they’ll turn out something with flavor. Livetronica duo Big Gigantic and DJ/producer/instrumentalist/vocalist GRiZ are no strangers to working with each other as it is, and their latest collaboration, “C’mon,” proves them just as capable of seamlessly blending their styles as ever.
Dominic Lalli likely put his saxophone chops to use in “C’mon” – although for all we know it could have been GRiZ, as he’s known to break out the brass during his own performances from time to time. The funky, glitch-hop-inspired bass line segues from one instrumental section to the other, and the only real criticism I can make of the track is that it sounds awfully similar to what Big Gigantic released last year in the form of “Get On Up.”
Both acts have performed alongside Gramatik as Big GrizMatik for quite some time now, so their musical chemistry comes as no surprise. The Slovenian bass music DJ/producer himself chose Denver as the testing ground for his recent song “War of the Currents,” the last time they shared a stage (separately, in this case), and we were lucky enough to capture footage of its debut.
With any luck “C’mon” is a sign that both Big Gigantic and GRiZ are each revving up their motors for a slew of festival season releases. Either way, both acts are worth keeping an eye on in the months to follow.
