Shortly after creator Ryan Murphy announced that the original cast of Glee would soon graduate, we learn some surprising news about who will be involved in Glee’s future. Blaine (Darren Criss) and Mike (Harry Shum) will be upgraded to series regulars, and sadly, Sam (Chord Overstreet) hasn’t been picked up for a series regular position.
This all comes from Deadline, where they also report that Overstreet may be an occasional guest star in the future.
The news about Blaine and Mike makes total sense. Darren Criss, who was previously known for playing Harry Potter in the Youtube sensation, “A Very Potter Musical,” has become a legitimate celebrity thanks to Glee. The young fresh-faced actor had a musical number in seemingly every episode after the audience’s strong reaction to his character and his message.
Mike Chang, who has been with the New Directions from the very start, has been given more and more screentime and specific plots in recent episodes. Chang represents the members of Glee who can’t really sing, but wow can they dance.
Deadline also reports some bad news for fans of “Pisces.” Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink) won’t be a series regular, but she will remain a guest star. Her appearances may be reduced however.
Lauren Zizes was in almost every single episode of the past season, and the writers seemed to be building her relationship with Puck (Mark Salling) consistently. It’s a bit of a surprise that she won’t be a regular but I suppose Murphy has his reasons.
What do you think on all this? Happy to see Criss and Shum upgraded to series regular? Or do you think other characters deserved the status more than Darren Criss and Harry Shum did?
