If anything can be said about Batman’s rogues gallery, it’s that it boasts the deepest and arguably most psychologically complex collection of villains in all of comics. One such baddie that’s enjoyed some time in the limelight following the success of 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises is that of everyone’s favorite militant to don a luchador mask, who will soon be granted a 12-issue limited series written and illustrated by his original creators in the form of Bane: Conquest.
That’s right, none other than Chuck Dixon and Graham Nolan will return to grant Bane “new cities to conquer and new enemies to crush.” And although we’re only two issues deep into the “I am Bane” story arc currently unfolding in the pages of Tom King and David Finch’s Batman, something tells us that the Dark Knight will gain the upper hand in the end, no matter what status quo changes the tale spawns. Thus, his deadly nemesis will probably be seeking out greener pastures this spring.
Something plaguing my mind is how the titular character will be depicted. In books such as Deathstroke (who was recently revealed to be the lynchpin in the upcoming “Lazarus Contract” crossover) and Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death, those folks were looked at as anti-heroes in an attempt to get readers to sympathize with them. But with Bane, it’s hard to see him as anything but a villain, so I’m most interested to see how Dixon tells this story.
