It’s always awkward when a divisive political figure (or anyone in the public eye, for that matter) utilizes an artist’s music (in a fair game manner) but then gets blasted by either the artist themself, or their immediate family. Well, that’s exactly what has transpired after Donald Trump’s post-arraignment address pre-show playlist contained David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel.”
While Bowie is sadly no longer with us to condemn Trump and disassociate himself from the controversial former President of the United States, his son Duncan Jones is around to fill in – and he didn’t hold back on Twitter when it came to blasting the Trump camp for using his late father’s hit:
Jones’ colorful language probably speaks for every fan of David Bowie’s, no doubt all of whom are disgusted by Trump’s audacity to include “Rebel Rebel” as we awaited his comments on, you know, just a cheeky bit of criminal activity.
Trump’s address played out more like a stump speech on the campaign trail rather than the former President’s response to being charged with 34 felony counts. Even the lead-up and the music that surrounded Bowie’s tune was just straight up bizarre — we weren’t sure if Trump was backstage waiting to come out for a WWE match or to address – again – criminal. charges.
It all culminated in Trump’s inevitable and cringeworthy entrance music being Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA,” before he ended up spending 20-odd minutes bashing the Democrats with the occasional “this is persecution and not an investigation” spiel we’ve grown accustomed to, if you’ve been unfortunate enough to be exposed to his Truth Social ramblings.
