Grim grinning ghosts might come out to socialize, but Disney is waiting on their new favorite guest to knock upon the door at the Haunted Mansion before the newest party gets started: they’re waiting for you. A new trailer for the upcoming film debuted today, and it looks whimsical, magical, and full of frights.
With wall-to-wall creeps and spooks of every size, we see Rosario Dawson and Chase Dillon as a mother-and-son duo who plan to start fresh with a new chapter in New Orleans, but things aren’t exactly what they seem. In fact, this retelling has a spookier element than you might have initially anticipated, but the comedic and sarcastic stylings that we hoped for are right on the mark.
The synopsis for Haunted Mansion promises a new take on a Disney classic, and we can’t wait to see what this crew discovers when they open the doors to the mansion. After all, it’ll be full of quaking tombstones and hitchhiking ghosts.
“In this mysterious adventure, a doctor and her 9-year-old son, looking to start a new life, move into a strangely affordable mansion in New Orleans, only to discover that the place is much more than they bargained for. Desperate for help, they contact a priest, who, in turn, enlists the aid of a widowed scientist-turned failed-paranormal expert, a French Quarter psychic, and a crotchety historian.”
This is the second adaptation of the legendary Disney World attraction, following on from the unfortunately pretty forgettable 2003 movie starring Eddie Murphy, Marsha Thomason, and Terence Stamp. Guillermo del Toro was previously attached to offer a much darker take on the IP before that went the way of many of his projects and failed to materialize.
The new installment into the Haunted Mansion story boasts an all-star cast to bring this version of the story to life, including Jamie Lee Curtis as the beloved Madame Leota alongside Owen Wilson, Rosario Dawson, Chase Dillon, Tiffany Haddish, LaKeith Stanfield, Danny DeVito, Winona Ryder, and Jared Leto.
Disney’s Haunted Mansion is one of the most beloved rides at Disney parks, and this movie is sure to turn new audiences everywhere into hopefuls to fill the vacancy and join the other 999 happy haunts that call it home.
Haunted Mansion invites you to theaters for a visit on July 28 — and it’ll be the perfect way to usher us into spooky season.
