Marc Maron makes perfect sense as Stan Lee, plain and simple. If ever there were a guy out there who could bring to life the pop culture icon we all can thank for creating modern superheroes, Marc Maron is our man. Even if he doesn’t really care for superheroes to begin with, but we’ll leave that for a different article.
The internet at large has actually campaigned for this for quite some time now, and as Stan Lee’s legacy only continues to grow — so too does the hype surrounding Maron’s portrayal. During a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Marc Maron touched on that ever-present hype, and actually gave an incredibly insightful dissection of the Marvel mythos.
“There’s been a lot of momentum, a lot of requests for that on the Internet. I see it on Twitter all the time, because I think the appearance and I think he was sort of cranky, and I think I could probably manage it. We’re both Jews. I think there is that world of those early guys, especially the Jewish nature of it, which isn’t talked about a whole lot, how many of them were Jewish and creating these mythologies.”
Don’t you love when people know stuff like this? Sometimes, for the right person, it’s not enough to just enjoy a thing outright. Instead, they want to know who made that thing in the first place, and where they come from altogether. What’s their story?
By understanding that, folks are able to contextualize their own experiences against the people that gave them whatever it is they enjoy in the first place. Marc Maron seems to agree.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Marc is a comedian, he’ll never be able to pull off playing Stan Lee, right? Wrong! Marc Maron could be the perfect guy for the job, bringing the late writer’s warmth and levity to a portrayal our moviegoing audiences desperately need right now.
“I actually did a joke about that in my last special, not the last one, but the one before about how the similarities between Iron Man and the New Testament is that they were both created in Jewish writers’ rooms. I thought that was funny.”
Say what you will, but Marc Maron has done his homework. Let’s let the dude put it to good use. I want a Stan Lee movie, and I want it as soon as possible — so get to lobbying, internet, and don’t forget who sent ya when you make the big time.
