Most of Zack Snyder’s former regime might have been reduced to atoms, but there is one character who has survived the cull, and James Gunn has confirmed who will be running their show.
If you’ve been paying attention to Gunn’s restructure of DC, then you’ll know it’s not everyday that we get to see a character returning from the old regime. However, there are exceptions such as Peacemaker, and we also know that Amanda Waller will be getting her own solo show, simply titled Waller. In a tweet shared to Reddit, one fan asked the director to give a little more detail about showrunners for announced episodic DCU projects so far.
Gunn replied to the question opting to reveal some more information on Waller, which has been confirmed as part of the roster for the first chapter Gods and Monsters. The show will be streaming on Max like all upcoming DC originals, and we already know that Viola Davis will be returning as the titular character.
Davis has been a mainstay of the DCEU since she first appeared in 2016’s Suicide Squad. She was arguably the best part of that film, and she returned in Gunn’s reboot The Suicide Squad, as well Peacmaker and Black Adam.
Unlike most of the former DCEU cast, Davis has managed to avoid the boot, but to be fair, no one could play Amanda Waller as well as she did, so it makes sense that Gunn would want to keep her around. After all; he’s already worked with her on two of his projects.
It’s now been confirmed who’ll be leading the new show, as Gunn’s reply told us all we need to know: “Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol) are running Waller.” Well, his choices are pretty sound considering the pair’s credentials; both shows were pretty well received, with Henry working as a writer on the former, whilst Carver was a showrunner on the latter.
This is some pretty welcome news, as we can now rest easy knowing Waller is in safe hands. Both are experienced in their field, and know their way around adapting comic books for television. On top of that, we have Davis returning, so it looks like it’s set to be one hell of a great addition to the DCU’s first chapter.
