With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hitting theaters soon, the marketing machine for the beloved franchise has really started ramping up. Now, director James Gunn has got in on the action, tweeting on Thursday night about the location of a Guardians of the Galaxy pop-up experience at Coachella.
The films, all three of which have been directed by Gunn, have breathed new life into some of Marvel’s lesser-known characters, bringing them plenty of fans in the process. The charming, often cheeky humor and brilliant, mind-bending action sequences have also added to the popularity of the movies, which is reaching a fever pitch among the most committed fans as we approach the end of the story arc for these characters. Thankfully, we’ll definitely get a proper goodbye, as the film is set to be one of the longest in the MCU.
Gunn wasn’t the only person tweeting about the time and location of the Coachella pop-up, as the official Guardians of the Galaxy Twitter account also posted the information a few hours before the director. This tweet was in turn retweeted by Marvel’s main account, spreading the message far and wide.
What exactly will happen at the Knowhere-themed event is yet to be disclosed, but we can be pretty certain it won’t skimp on the aesthetics, and fans who visit are sure to feel like they’re at the base for the Guardians while likely getting some killer (and unique) merch. The pop-up will be located in Banning, California, and is open from 10am-6pm today and tomorrow — so only on the first weekend of the famous music festival.
Pratt will reprise his role as Star-Lord/Peter Quill in the third and final film, and fellow heartthrob Bradley Cooper is also back as Rocket. There are some new additions to the cast, too: Chukwudi Iwuji will portray the High Evolutionary, Will Poulter is playing Adam Warlock, and Nico Santos and Daniela Melchior are set to appear in unknown roles.
In an interview with ComicBook.com about the upcoming Super Mario Bros film, Pratt discussed his mixed emotions at coming to the endpoint of his Guardians of the Galaxy adventure:
“It was really emotional for so many reasons that it would take too long in this interview to even get into. But it just was emotional. It was a lot of gratitude around the fact that James Gunn actually directed it and was able to do that. Just grateful that he even gave me the job to begin with. It felt gratifying, knowing that critics had said that it would likely be the first Marvel movie to bomb. And what was that gonna be like, to be the first Marvel movie to not be successful? To take these characters that no one knew, and now have them be household names, and to be part of that, and to have rides around the world. It’s been an incredible ten years. So to wrap it up in this way, it’s a little bit like your last day of school when you’re a senior. You’re so excited that it’s over, but at the same time, you don’t know if you’re going to see any of your friends ever again…It’s the turning of a page. So it’s exciting, but it’s emotional.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to be released on May 5.
