Let’s take a second to feast on the most over-the-top moments in the ‘Fast X’ trailer

At what point do we, or should we have started calling these superhero films?

If the Fast & Furious franchise has become notorious for anything over the years (besides family), it’s the series’ sharp left turn from a somewhat grounded illegal street racing story and into a straight-up superhero film series where the fate of the world is placed in the hands of Dominic Toretto and his ever-expanding roster of frenemies.

By this point, it’s best to just (pun is absolutely intended here) steer into the dumb action fun that it is — and that is exactly the sentiment that has been expressed on Twitter in the days since the Fast X trailer dropped, and in the aftermath of its Super Bowl spot.

Kicking off with the staple of completely implausible shows of strength introduced in Fast & Furious 6 when Dom leapt from a moving vehicle across a freeway, caught Letty, and landed on a stationary car in the oncoming lane, we naturally need to progress from there.

Joining the hall of fame which includes The Rock flexing his way out of a cast, we’ve now got Jakob Toretto (John Cena) throwing some chump through a hardwood floor, newcomer Tess (Brie Larson) just decimate everyone in her vicinity, and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and Cipher (Charlize Theron) just absolutely wailing on each other:

Then we’ve got the absolutely batcrap vehicle acrobatics, with Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) doing a sick mono then a 360 degree bunny hop over a barrier:

Moving on, much like the safe extraction scene in Fast Five, we’ve got an inanimate object wreaking absolute havoc all over an unsuspecting city:

And last, but not least, yet again we see Dom’s Dodge Charger showcasing its unlimited horsepower effortlessly, by clapping two attack helicopters together like they’re slices of bread:

So all of the ingredients for Fast & Furious movies since the early 2000’s are in place, now we’re just waiting on Jason Momoa to become another one of Dom’s frenemies, and for the crew to somehow go time-traveling now that they’ve already been in space

Fast X speeds into theaters on May 19, 2023.
