After a relatively quiet beginning of 2016, Major Lazer are back on the scene with a brand new remix. The Diplo-founded Jamaican dancehall outfit has broken their silence with a Grandtheft collaboration titled “Number One” – which is actually more of a remix of Johnny Osbourne’s 1985 reggae classic, “Buddy Bye.”
As with much of they put out on last year’s Peace Is The Mission, their “Buddy Bye” remix doesn’t exactly fit within the confines of traditional dancehall. It borrows some elements, to be sure, but intermingles them with sawtooth synths and short, pitch-shifted samples of the original vocal that give it a stronger bass music appeal.
Peace Is The Mission‘s follow up album, Music Is The Weapon, is still slated to come out this summer. As such, perhaps “Number One” is among several tracks that will trickle out early from the effort.
Either way, if you like what you heard on Major Lazer and Gradtheft’s “Number One,” then keep on the lookout for more now that festival season has begun.
