As season 3 of The Vampire Diaries wrapped up, one of the biggest shocks was the loss of history teacher/vampire hunter/psuedo parental figure Alaric Saltzman, played by Matt Davis.
Killing off such a huge character in the series may seem drastic, but by now fans of the show should know that no one is safe in Mystic Falls. Fans of Davis were lucky enough to not have a long wait before news of his next move.
It’s old news now that Davis traded one CW series for another, leading the cast of the new show Cult, scheduled to premiere in January. What is news though is that Matt Davis will be returning to his old haunt in form unknown in the upcoming season 4. Davis confirmed the news himself this weekend at Comic-con.
Although he didn’t have any specifics to reveal, with Jeremy’s (Steven R. McQueen) ghost seeing abilities, it only makes sense that he would come back as some sort of spirit – but with the talented writing team of The Vampire Diaries, it’s hard to tell how he’ll figure into it all.
It actually makes a lot of sense that he would still be involved in some capacity. After all, Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Jeremy have already lost every parent figure they’ve ever known, and some they didn’t know they had. Unlike Aunt Jenna’s (Sara Canning) exit from the show a year earlier, which was particularly final, this one just felt unfinished.
Season 4 is going to have some intense plot twists with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) taking over Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) body, the Gilbert household once again adjusting to a parent-less existence, and Elena having finally made her choice. I can’t wait to see where the writers are going to take it, and more power to production for bringing Davis into the mix at some point.
Will you be waiting for the mid-season premiere of Cult or holding your breath until Matt Davis reappears on The Vampire Diaries? Like Katherine (also Dobrev) said, “It’s ok to love them both.”
