Surrounding the promotion of his new Netflix series Love, Judd Apatow gave fans of Freaks and Geeks a potential reason to be excited for the show’s thought-to-be-over future. When asked about the possibility for a revival of Freaks and Geeks, given the popularity of bringing back beloved properties into the modern era, Apatow said that the return of the classic series “could happen.”
“All of those characters died in a super-max prison,” Apatow said, before adding, ”You never know. It could happen.”
Far from a confirmation of a new season for Freaks and Geeks, Apatow’s words at least give fans of the short-lived show the hope for a return to its characters in the future. When it originally aired in 1999 for one season, the show followed the stories of a collection of misfits in a Michigan high school. Paul Feig, director of Bridesmaids, Spy, and the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, created the series, while Apatow produced it.
Freaks and Geeks has become well known due to its large cast of now-famous actors, including Jason Segel, Seth Rogen, Busy Phillips, and Linda Cardellini. Due to the nature of the sprawling cast roster, a reboot of the show may be a high order for any service that attempts to tackle it, unless the writers decide to simply focus on a new slate of characters entirely.
