Flanking the final trailer for The Super Mario Bros Movie during the Nintendo’s Direct livestream were appearances by the movie’s cast and crew, as well as one of Nintendo’s head honchos, Shigeru Miaymoto.
Industry showcases of any kind often tend to cap off with a titillating “one more thing.” In the case of the final trailer stream, said “thing” was Miyamoto excitedly announcing a sculpture of Mario’s shoes as designed for The Super Mario Bros. Movie popping up at the Nintendo Store in New York. Not the full mustachioed plumber, just his shoes.
The announcement raised many an eyebrow in the wake of the livestream, with Twitter collectively sharing a laugh out loud moment over the absurd promotional set piece which will pop up in Manhattan tomorrow:
In any case, if you’re a New York local, as of March 10 you can swing by Rockefeller Center and check out Mario’s shoe-game for yourself, if you’re weirdly inclined to do so. We look forward to seeing some amusing ‘grams.
The befuddling “shoe-gate” aside, the final The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer was largely well-received. It gave us a good glimpse at the innards of Bowser’s domain, a colorful and true-to-game platforming sequence with Mario and Donkey Kong, and a particularly awesome Mario Kart sequence.
Additionally, seeing as Chris Pratt actually spoke a fair bit more in the final trailer, it would appear that people are finally starting to warm up to The Guardians of the Galaxy star stepping into the shoes (haha) of everyone’s favorite video game plumber, but the jury’s still out until we see it for ourselves on April 5.
