Days Gone
Days Gone is the first new intellectual property developed by SIE Bend Studios since 1999’s Syphon Filter. Despite having some difficulty drawing a crowd at E3, the open world action-adventure definitely showed some promise.
Taking place two years after a global pandemic that turned millions into ‘freakers,’ players take control of protagonist Deacon St. John, a bounty hunter turned drifter. Using a combination of stealth and more aggressive combat, Deacon must find a way to survive in a harsh, dying world.
Another post-apocalyptic zombie game, Days Gone seems to have borrowed heavily from The Last of Us, although that’s not necessarily a bad thing. You could do worse than to take a page from Naughty Dog’s modern classic. That being said, it looks to be a much faster experience, as we see Deacon running and gunning from a massive horde of freakers. These creatures come in a variety of subtypes; Newts and Hordes are two such types featured in the E3 trailer.
The comparison to other zombie games is unavoidable, and SIE Bend Studios will need to work hard to ensure it stands out from the pack. However, just because it’s been done before doesn’t mean it won’t be done well and as of now, Days Gone looks like it’s full of potential.
