It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from Australian pop band Sheppard, but that finally changes today. The group hit the airwaves in the United States in 2014 when they released their larger than life single, “Geronimo,” and it went on to sell over a million copies in the country. Despite failing to make much noise afterwards, Sheppard is hitting restart with their new single, “We Belong.”
“We Belong” resides more on the side of “indie” than their previous material, which happened to take more of a pop rock route. Ridiculously catchy and practically 80’s esque, the song almost sounds like a poppier and more predictable version of The 1975. That isn’t a bad thing though – the song succeeds at what it tries to do, as it’s different for Sheppard and destined for radio, even if it may not be the most original track out there. It’ll surely be a hit in their home country of Australia, but whether it’ll make an impact in the United States remains to be seen.
Sheppard’s last record was their debut, Bombs Away, and “We Belong” is the first taste we’re getting from their sophomore full-length. It’s planning to arrive sometime next year, and though they’ve got a lot to live up to after the success of “Geronimo,” “We Belong” is getting a new album off to a good start.
