Melissa McCarthy is The Little Mermaid‘s sea witch in the upcoming live-action Disney fairytale retelling, one of PEOPLE Magazine’s cover stories for their Beautiful Issue, and a major fan of an iconic girl power movie about friendship and love.
In fact, she’s such a fan of one of her past films that she opened up to PEOPLE about jumping at the opportunity to return to it at any given point, be it today or when she’s in her 90s!
“If we are all in our nineties and Kristen and Annie are like, ‘Should we team back up?’ I’d be like, ‘Yes. Yeah, we should.'”
So what movie is it? Well, if the names she mentioned didn’t give it away, one thing will: the lines to the song “Hold On” by Wilson Phillips — yep, we’re talking about Bridesmaids.
“I would do a Bridesmaids sequel this afternoon, right now. That group of women was the most magical thing ever. Almost all of us were really good friends already. I think it was such a magical time.”
What made the time together so magical? As McCarthy explains her passion for the film, it becomes obvious — all of the things we loved so much about the movie are the reasons they loved it too. They were building upon friendships, experiencing some of life’s most hilarious moments, and laughing so hard you couldn’t even stand up.
“Oh my God. Just being around that many funny people where truly it was like people dropping to the ground because we couldn’t get air in. From a distance, it must have looked like we all had food poisoning because there were just times where we’d be like… You can’t be around that group of humans and not just be beside yourself.”
It’s a gift to fans to know that we weren’t the only ones laughing so hard that it was hard to catch our breath. Be it the food poisoning scene, the flight that introduced us all to our favorite (faux) Air Marshal, or another scene McCarthy says she loved — it was the perfect weekend watch with all your best gal pals.
“Yeah, that and the dogs, I did enjoy all the dogs,” McCarthy began; in fact, she loved them so much she thinks she’d be doing something with those dogs and her partner, Air Marshal Jon — played by her real-life hubby.
“Running her trucking company. And they’re obviously private detectives, obviously, just to state what everybody knows. I think they have matching denim jackets with each other’s image painted on it. I think they’re so happy. And they’re running a dog rescue, I’ll say that.”
Of course, fans did anticipate hearing something about The Little Mermaid from McCarthy, but we can’t help but be totally on board with her spending most of her time talking about Bridesmaids. It’s one of those movies you can watch again and again, and we love the dogs too! So who do we need to talk to about a reunion? Let’s get that ball moving, stat.
While we’ll have to wait a while to see McCarthy play the character of Megan again, you can soon see her as Ursula as The Little Mermaid swims into theaters on May 26,
