It’s been a while since we’ve gotten any original material from Train, but the pop group just unveiled a brand new single entitled “Play That Song,” which comes off their upcoming album set for release sometime next year.
The most noticeable thing about “Play That Song” right off the bat is that it’s got a lighthearted, pure-pop radio single sound that the band hasn’t delved into too much since their record California 37. Their last album, 2014’s Bulletproof Picasso, was ultimately a disappointment, but its singles like “Angel In Blue Jeans” and “Cadillac, Cadillac” had more of an alternative-pop vibe to it. “Play That Song” is essentially a return to form for Train, and that form has gotten them to the top of the charts for nearly two decades.
“Play That Song” is going to draw some comparisons to artists like Gavin DeGraw, who’s been releasing new material also, but Train puts a spin on it that lets everyone know that it’s still 100% them through and through. This may be the first new song from the band in years, but Train’s actually been busy this year promoting a unique cover album – back in June, they released a cover record of Led Zeppelin II, with all proceeds going to the San Francisco charity, Family House.
