In case you’ve been under a rock for the past week, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists declared a strike back on July 14. Not only are the Writers Guild of America still on their strike started back in May, the majority of Hollywood actors are now on strike with them, all fighting for fair wages and better protection against AI. Leading the charge is SAG-AFTRA president and former star of The Nanny, Fran Drescher.
Serving as the president for the united actor’s union since 2021, Drescher is no stranger to standing in solidarity with unions. Since the announcement of SAG-AFTRA’s strike, many people have been posting clips from The Nanny showcasing Drescher’s character, Fran Fine, as a strong ally to those striking for workers’ rights. However, one influencer forgot about the source material of one iconic TikTok sound.
In a now-deleted TikTok, influencer Andra Gogan posted a video showing off her look she was wearing to the Haunted Mansion premiere at Disneyland, using a clip from The Nanny, where Fran is showing off her look to a less-than-enthusiastic Maxwell. Many were quick to criticize Gogan for attending the premiere, as it was considered crossing the picket line, or scabbing. But others pointed out the irony in the audio clip she chose for the video.
As seen in the above TikTok from Under The Desk News, using a clip from The Nanny to show off your “scab” behavior is extremely disrespectful to Fran Drescher. The above clip demonstrates that Fran’s character refuses to go into a restaurant where workers are striking, as her mother told her that’s one of three things to never do. Even if it caused a scene and embarrassed Maxwell, Fran was willing to stand up for the workers’ rights.
Drescher herself created and produced the show throughout its 6 seasons, so it’s safe to say she intentionally made being a union supporter a big part of Fran’s character. No surprise, considering Drescher herself is now president of a union on strike. Naturally, everyone is enjoying seeing Fran being a union supporter since the ‘90s, and it’s reminding everyone why they adore Drescher in the first place.
Another viral clip of Drescher from the film The Beautician and the Beast showcases similar emotions as The Nanny clip. Drescher’s character Joy Miller helps trade workers organize a strike in an attempt to unionize. Between the two clips, people are absolutely rooting for Drescher to continue to fight. Falling in line with former SAG president Ronald Regan, one commenter said “Fran Drescher for Prez!” Another commenter remarked, “I gotta say… Fran is everyone’s nanny now.” We agree.
