Cynical MCU fans are scoffing at the idea that Wonder Man could live up to the hype of being one of a kind.
Fans collectively groaned in the r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers subreddit when producer Stephen Broussard used the word “unique” to describe the upcoming new Disney Plus series.
No one could resist the opportunity to mock the fact that Wonder Man’s selling points sound identical to those of every other TV series and film in the Marvel franchise, particularly the claim that it is different from anything else in the MCU.
Another fan opined that Broussard’s comments were contradictory because he claimed the show was unique while being influenced by the comics.
Another Redditor said they’ve heard it all before. Broussard’s remarks echoed the promotional script for other MCU shows and movies.
Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Andrew Guest (30 Rock) are developing the series. Cretton is attached to direct several episodes of the TV series.
The show will star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, the son and heir of industrialist Sanford Williams. When his father passes away, Simon inherits Williams Innovations and discovers it’s losing its market share to Stark Industries. Tony Stark soon becomes Simon’s nemesis. A series of harrowing events lead to him becoming endowed with superhuman powers that turn him into Wonder Man.
Will Wonder Man be unique? Its protagonist is sufficiently complex and he has an intriguing grudge against Iron Man. At the end of the day, it will come down to the ingenuity of the creative team.
