Four days ago, we brought you news of Fox’s 2014-15 fall television line-up, which included such highly-anticipated shows as Gotham and Gracepoint. Now, ABC has thrown its hat into the ring by releasing its own fall schedule. Though I don’t think any of us would argue that ABC has a single show with as much advance buzz as Gotham, there are still some promising programs in the mix this year, despite the network’s overabundance of half-hour comedies.
Personally, I’m most interested to see How to Get Away with Murder, which will bring two-time Oscar nominee Viola Davis to the small screen under the watch of Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes. The plot, about a legal professor in Philadelphia who becomes wrapped up along with her students in a murder plot, sounds more serialized than most, and Davis is a tremendously talented actress, so unless How to Get Away with Murder turns into another tiring soap, chances are it will be worth watching.
Forever, which stars Ioan Gruffudd as an inexplicably immortal medical examiner searching for clues about the nature of his own longevity, could also be good – unless it puts case-of-the-week storytelling above developing Gruffudd’s protagonist. With The Vampire Diaries already featuring a host of centuries-old characters, the idea of an immortal protagonist isn’t as immediately fascinating as it probably once was.
On the comedy side, Selfie (pictured above) impressed me with its pilot episode, which was released to critics earlier this year, and the presence of actress Karen Gillan should keep me coming back until the story – about a social media-savvy woman forced to disconnect and develop an off-screen life – starts to grate. black-ish, about one family’s struggle for cultural and ethnic identity in the modern age, is also interesting so far.
