Star Wars: Ahsoka may have split the fandom down the middle, but there’s no denying that the series introduced some intriguing concepts. Better yet, it expanded upon the NightSisters, a spooky race of Force wielding witches who don’t need no man.
The witches have been haunting the Star Wars universe for decades. After first making their debut in a 1994 novel, they reappeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars almost 20 years later. Not quite Sith and definitely not Jedi, these talented welders of the Force manipulate it to do some incredibly spooky and weird things. Even Emperor Palpatine knew that witches were too dangerous to live, and ordered their destruction during the animated series. For those who need to see more of the red-clad sorceresses, we’ve compiled a list of every time the Nightsisters have appeared in the Star Wars universe. From Rebels and The Clone Wars to Ahsoka and The Acolyte, here’s every time the Sisters have manipulated The Thread on screen.
Witches of Dathomir episodes in Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Star Wars: The Clone Wars first introduced Asajj Ventress in the first season. What they failed to tell viewers was that the Sith apprentice was of Dathomarian descent. When Ventress is finally cut loose from her former master, Count Dooku, she seeks solace in the arms of her witchy sisters. After Count Dooku is sent to destroy his wayward apprentice, he gets more than he bargained for with the territorial Nightsisters.
- Season 3 Episode 12 – Nightsisters
The first introduction of the sisters, this episode fully centers around the coven and explores their magic. It establishes a decent base for their powers and is an absolute must-watch for any fan of Asajj Ventress.
- Season 3 Episode 13- Monster
Though it doesn’t center around the Nightsisters specifically, this episode goes into the other side of the planet. That’s right, the female and male Dathomarians live on opposite sides of their home world. Some excellent Darth Maul backstory makes this episode a fine addition to the collection.
- Season 3 Episode 14 –Witches of the Mist
The final episode in the arc shows the epic showdown between fully trained Jedi Knights like Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. It shows just how much more powerful the Nightsister’s abilities are than that of the Jedi, and lays out the idea behind “The Power of Many.”
Season 4 Episode 19 – Massacre
Several months after the last arc, Massacre picks up with Ventress attempting to become a full-fledged Nightsister. As the title implies, Dooku sends troops under General Grevious’ command to wipe out the witches for good.
Witches of Dathomir episodes in Star Wars: Rebels
You just can’t say “Witches of Dathomir” without summoning a Darth Maul subplot in Star Wars. The Rebels arcs surrounding the witches only happen in the third season, but it’s well worth the watch.
Season 3 Episode 11: Visions and Voices
The final pieces of a rather long arc between Ezra and Darth Maul, Visions and Voices take the Ghost crew to the demolished Dathomir. It’s some good old-fashioned spooky witch business, and really helps hammer home how much danger the Witches pose – even after they’re dead and buried. The Nightsister Episodes in Ahsoka
The Nightsisters might not have entire episodes devoted to them in Ahsoka, but their magic can be felt throughout much of the 1st season. The series features Morgan Elsbeth, a Nightsister loyal to Grand Admiral Thrawn, and takes fans back to Peridea, the original home world of the Dathomiri.
Season 1 Episode 6: “Far, Far Away”
The episode gives viewers a taste the full extent of General Thrawn’s reliance on the Dathomiri’s power. The 3 Great mothers, powerful witches who serve Thrawn, have some neat tricks up their sleeves, but the show stopper for this coven is their “Night Trooper” army. Lead by a trooper with a golden face plate named Enoch, the Night Troopers are a welcome addition to the lore, and make for a spooky alternative to the classic Storm Trooper.
Better yet, the Sister’s cagey conversations around Thrawn’s mystery cargo will leave you shouting, “What’s in the box?!”
Season 1 Episode 8
The Great Mothers yet again cast some freaky spells, but this time the action just can’t be beaten. The witches showcase some of their awesome necromantic abilities, and we finally get a peek of how dangerous an undying force of loyal Troopers can be. If you ever wanted a Dawn of the Dead/ Star Wars crossover, this episode is for you. Oh, and Morgan Elsbeth flaming green sword is pretty neat too.
A new coven is revealed in The Acolyte
Season 1 Episode 3: Destiny
The Acolyte takes fans back 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, and shows a universe where the Jedi are willing to do whatever it takes to maintain peace. The episode gives us the backstory of Mae and Osha, two young Nightsisters with a surprising connection to the Force. It shows some very cool witchy powers, and fleshes out some of those strange abilities that Palpatine’s Sith master, Plagueis the Wise, used to take over the universe. Best of all, it requires absolutely no knowledge of the rest of the show.
