The Walking Dead might be creeping up to its tenth season now, but there’s a lot of life left in this undead franchise yet. After all, we know that AMC’s currently laying the foundations for what they’re calling a “multigenerational” expanded universe of spinoffs and TV movies.
The only ones officially announced so far are the trio of films that’ll see Andrew Lincoln reprise his role as Rick Grimes, following his exit from the show late last year. Several other characters from TWD past and present will be granted their own vehicles as well, though, and one that immediately springs to mind as an obvious choice is Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan.
As those who read the comics will know, creator Robert Kirkman has already explored the character’s backstory in his Here’s Negan comic book miniseries, so there’s already a ton of material to mine. Not only that, but when someone asked Morgan if he’d be up for it last year, the actor replied with an enthusiastic: “Hell yeah.”
And though we’re still waiting on confirmation on if such a thing will ever happen, we can at least tell you with 100% certainty that there is indeed a new Walking Dead spinoff in development over at AMC. Speaking to The Wrap, the network’s COO confirmed as much, saying:
“That is in active development. We’re not yet at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere. But we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series.”
Unfortunately, he stopped short of revealing just which character or characters this new show will focus on, but sources close to We Got This Covered have told us that Negan is one of the ones being pitched. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ll 100% be seeing a series centered around Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s fan favorite villain, but again, it’s one of the ideas currently being tossed around.
Regardless of which route they end up heading in, this is great news for fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead, as it shows that even after 10 seasons, there’s still a lot of story left to tell in this universe and the property will be sticking around for a while yet.
