Based on how quickly Netflix moved to renew The Night Agent, which was awarded a second season less than a week after premiering, big things may be in store for The Diplomat, the streaming service’s latest tale of high-ranking political intrigue.
Per FlixPatrol, not only has the eight-episode thriller debuted on the Top 10 in 88 countries around the world since landing yesterday, but it’s taken only 24 hours to dislodge the aforementioned spy series and take pride of place as the number one most-watched episodic project on the global charts.
Hopefully a second run of episodes is announced sooner rather than later, or else it runs the risk of becoming the latest high-profile Netflix casualty to end on a cliffhanger that’s never going to get paid off. The Diplomat follows Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler, who unexpectedly ends up being appointed as the United States’ new ambassador to the United Kingdom.
Over the course of the show, though, it becomes clear there was a clear plan in place that she wasn’t made privy to, which dovetails with the looming threat of a potential war and a crumbling marriage to Rufus Sewell’s career politician. A Rotten Tomatoes score of 88 percent is complemented nicely by an even better audience approval rating of 91 percent, so it’s obvious that The Diplomat has plenty of substance to go along with its undoubted style.
Having exploded out of the blocks, the chances are already looking good that season 2 is a mere formality, which is good news for the mountainous volume of subscribers set to binge creator Debora Cahn’s latest in no time at all.
