A&E has decided to give their new hit show, Bates Motel, a ten-episode second season. Acting as a prequel to Psycho, just with a contemporary setting, the premiere drew in an impressive 4.5 million viewers and reviews so far have been quite positive. The show just aired its fourth episode this week but already viewers are hooked on the intriguing misadventures of the troubled Bates family.
Though very pleasing, the news isn’t at all surprising. The series premiere was the highest rated program in the network’s history and just from the first four episodes, fans can already tell that they’re in for something special.
Already Bates Motel is one of my favourite news shows and I’m eager to see where the story will go from here. A ton of plot threads have been laid down in these short four weeks and each one is both mysterious, creepy and intriguing. The show constantly has me on edge and if the writers can carry that tension into season 2, which I believe they can, then we have nothing to worry about.
Plus, there is a ton of possibilities for where they can take the story next season. After all, Norman and Norma haven’t even officially opened their motel yet. There is lots of room for interesting plot threads revolving around motel guests and whatnot. Norman also hasn’t fully completed his transformation into full fledged killer, which is something I assume they’ll save for future seasons. Watching Norman’s evolution is one of the most intriguing things about the show and I hope they run with that plot thread for as long as they can.
As someone who finds it very difficult to get into a show, I’m more than pleased with what I’ve seen of Bates Motel so far. It’s incredibly effective and at times, truly chilling. Though I was skeptical at first, I think A&E has a real hit on their hands and I cannot wait to see what lies ahead for Norman and Norma Bates.
