Back when Better Call Saul was about to air, common wisdom was that it’d probably be good, but that there was absolutely no way it could possibly live up to the monolithic Breaking Bad. Well, against all odds, it pretty much has. What’s the winning formula? Well, in my opinion, it’s that creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould know what the audience want to see, but never quite give it to them. Instead, they present us with something we didn’t even know we wanted.
That’s the essence of the brilliant Better Call Saul, soon arriving for a third season of watching Jimmy McGill repeatedly screwing things up and sliding ever further into moral ineptitude. This new trailer boasts the series’ signature sharp visuals, making a dusty Alberquerque look like someone distilled the essence of 90s Mall down to a fine concentrate, and then stuffed it with a hefty portion of delicious fried chicken.
Said chicken is served up by Los Pollos Hermanos owner Gus Fring, a fan favorite returning from Breaking Bad. Fring, a restauranteur/mob boss/philanthropist, was first an ally and eventually an enemy of Walter White. Fans of that show will remember the memorable way in which he exited the show, so it’s nice to skip back in time to see him beginning the construction of his chicken/drug empire.
If you haven’t yet dipped your toe into Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul (where the hell have you been), you have just enough time to catch up before the season premieres on April 10th. There’s few TV shows operating at this calibre, and few better things to devote your free time to.
